Oxford and Cambridge already contain the largest density of Life Sciences R&D in the UK today. Yet the global race for innovation in the sector is very competitive and the UK lags behind.
This short film, created together with the Department of International Trade, the Arc Leadership Group, and the LEPs, highlights the collective vision for the region to be a world-leading Life Sciences cluster. If successful, this will deliver an accelerated pace of new treatments and advanced technologies, as well as high value jobs across the Arc, inward investment, as well as growing more and larger mid size companies – all to create greater resilience to deal with major health challenges and deliver huge health and wealth outcomes throughout the entire UK.
We are building on extremely fertile ground. Oxford and Cambridge are ranked in the top 5 institutions for life sciences and medicine globally, and ahead of cities such as London, Tokyo and Bejing, are in the top 10 science cities in the world – just imagine if we join this up properly. The region has vast untapped potential, already with an economic output of £100bn per year. Our critical mass in advance therapeutics will allow this region to build our capabilities for UK competitiveness for the future.
