A round-up of how the Arc Universities are using new technology in their response to COVID-19

OPEN UNIVERSITY

OU researchers have received funding to research the role of wearable device technology and scientific and clinical expertise to create early biomarkers of coronavirus infection. The team has received £50,000 from Innovate UK to partner with MindSpire, an innovative start up focused on decoding and treating chronic stress.

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a new app which will be used to collect data to develop machine learning algorithms that could detect whether a person is suffering from COVID-19 – based on the sound of their voice, their breathing and coughing. The COVID-19 Sounds App is currently available as a web app for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE

University of Bedfordshire academics and Citizens Advice Luton (CAL) have designed a smart device app, aimed at supporting individuals in Luton and across the county during the aftermath of COVID-19. With face-to face support not currently available, their new digital strategy incorporates both human assistance and online technologies for those who are not confident with digital platforms.

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE NEW UNIVERSITY

Bucks HSC Ventures, a virtual accelerator programme at Buckinghamshire New University designed to help businesses bring health and social care products and services to market, is taking its business support online for the next few months. The first workshop on defining your business model takes place on 2nd June. Find out more 

ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY

StoryLab research institute at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has launched an important project to collate and archive the incredible personal stories emerging from the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Frontline is a way of preserving the thoughts and emotions experienced by key workers during the pandemic. They can also use #frontlinestories on social media and follow the project via its Twitter account, @Frontline_ARU.

CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY

Cranfield University is hosting a digital sprint where scientists from across the world will collaborate to develop digital environmental tools that can help track, understand and predict the effects of COVID-19 and help lead to a greener post-pandemic future.

UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

Oxford has developed the first economic indicator of industry-specific risk assessments related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Business in every sector is becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of COVID-19, according to the CoRisk-Index.

UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OPEN UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON

The University of Bedfordshire has co-launched online workshops to help support the local and regional economy during Covid-19. In partnership with the Open University and the University of Northampton, Bedfordshire is running a series of online workshops.
