Business leaders have welcomed plans to accelerate East West Rail’s Bedford to Oxford services.

The Government has committed to delivering East West Rail in full and that £240m from existing funding will be provided to fast-track works on the Marston Vale Line between Bedford and Bletchley.

In a significant move towards enhancing regional connectivity, the UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the East West Rail (EWR) project in the Spring Budget. Notably, the Chancellor announced a substantial £240 million investment for the acceleration of works on the Bletchley to Bedford section, commonly referred to as the Marston Vale Line (MVL).

Operating under the existing Transport and Works Act Order granted for improvements between Oxford and Milton Keynes, this initiative aims to facilitate a minimum of one train per hour between Oxford and Bedford by 2030, augmenting the existing MVL services. The strategic investment is poised to introduce a new Oxford to Bedford service earlier than anticipated, delivering the benefits of EWR swiftly to local communities and businesses.

The accelerated project holds the promise of improved connectivity to innovation and economic hubs in Oxford, Bedford, and Milton Keynes. This initiative is anticipated to play a pivotal role in boosting regional productivity and unlocking new opportunities for growth.
